Discover the history, artefacts, and marine life that make the Toa Maru a must-see dive site near Gizo.
Just a twenty-minute boat ride from Gizo, the Toa Maru is one of the South Pacific’s most popular and accessible WWII shipwrecks. This 140-metre Japanese transport ship rests on its starboard side, sloping from 7 to 37 metres in depth. Sunk after an American attack, the wreck remains largely intact and is scattered with artefacts such as saki bottles, medical supplies, office equipment, and ammunition. Larger items like bombs, a motorbike, and a Type 21 tank can also be found.
Experienced divers can enjoy guided tours inside the wreck, exploring accessible rooms including the workshop, crew quarters, and dining area. The Toa Maru is also home to vibrant marine life, with frequent visits from turtles and rays. An extensive coral garden covers the top of the wreck, providing a colourful and relaxing spot for a safety stop after your dive. This site is a highlight for anyone interested in Gizo diving and Solomon Islands diving.
