Status of Commercial Marine Species - Conservation News

Overfishing Threatens Key Fisheries in the Solomon Islands

Scarcity of valuable species contrasts with thriving stocks in protected areas, underscoring the importance of conservation.

The assessment revealed a concerning scarcity of commercially important species such as sea cucumbers, Trochus shell, crayfish, giant clams, and large reef fish on many reefs. Iconic species like maori wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, and green snail were often absent, with green snail possibly locally extinct. In contrast, the Arnavon Marine Conservation Area, where commercial harvest is banned, showed abundant stocks of these species, including thriving pearl oysters after a decade of protection. This highlights the effectiveness of marine reserves in restoring and safeguarding vital fisheries.
