Solomon Islands Marine Assessment Key Findings - Conservation News

Comprehensive Survey Reveals Biodiversity and Conservation Challenges

A landmark 2004 assessment highlights the region’s global significance and urgent need for sustainable management.

In May and June 2004, an international team led by Dr Alison Green of The Nature Conservancy conducted the first comprehensive marine survey of the Solomon Islands’ main archipelago. Over 35 days, the team covered nearly 2,000 nautical miles and seven provinces, uncovering extraordinary biodiversity in both coral and fish species. The findings confirmed the Solomon Islands’ place within the Coral Triangle, the world’s richest marine biodiversity hotspot. However, the survey also revealed troubling signs of overfishing, with low numbers of commercially valuable species in most areas, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable management.
