Whales and Dolphins of the Solomon Islands - Conservation News
Cetacean Diversity, Migration, and Cultural Traditions
Ten species recorded, with dolphins abundant in some areas and traditional drives still practiced.
Benjamin Kahn (APEX Environmental Pty Ltd) observed relatively low cetacean diversity and abundance across most of the Solomon Islands, though dolphins were locally plentiful in certain areas. Ten cetacean species were recorded, including several dolphin species, orca, beaked whales, and sperm whales identified acoustically. Key regions like the Indispensable Strait serve as important migratory corridors. The traditional dolphin drive, still practiced in some communities, remains deeply rooted in local culture with little modern influence.
