The town’s main street, sealed in 2009, is lined with small shops and a bustling open-air market where locals and visitors buy fresh produce, seafood, and handmade crafts. Gizo is surrounded by palm-fringed islands, coral reefs, and clear blue waters, making it a popular destination for diving, snorkelling, and fishing.
The area is rich in history, with sites linked to World War II, including the famous Toa Maru shipwreck and several aircraft wrecks. Guided tours and bush walks to WWII land sites, village visits, and birdwatching excursions are available. Gizo has also played a role in historical research, assisting Dr. Robert Ballard and National Geographic in the search for PT109.
Local artisans are known for their wood and stone carvings, woven baskets, and mats, which are available at the Adventure Sports shop and the local market. Gizo offers a range of restaurants serving fresh seafood and tropical fruit, as well as general stores for everyday needs.
Gizo is easily accessible, with daily flights from Honiara to Nusatupe Airport, just a short boat ride from town. The upgraded airport and regular shipping connections make it a convenient base for exploring the Western Province and the wider Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands is the third-largest archipelago in the South Pacific. It covers an area of about 1.35 million square kilometres of sea. The six major islands form part of a scattered double chain of 922 islands, atolls and cays, which vary from large, rugged, heavily wooded and mountainous islands to low-lying coral atolls.
The Solomon Islands are located north east of Australia between 5 and 12 degrees south of the equator. They are three hours flying time from Brisbane.
Solomon Islanders number about 500,000 people from diverse cultures, including over 87 languages. English is the official language and is widely spoken and understood. Solomon Pidgin is the national language. Over 90% of the people are Melanesian. Polynesian and some Micronesians live on the outlying islands. A small minority of European, Chinese and others inhabit the main centres and resort locations.
The capital, and main entry point, is Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal. It is renowned as the scene of fierce battles during World War II, and the waters off Honiara are known as Iron Bottom Sound. A couple of days and dives spent exploring here is recommended as a complement a dive trip to Gizo.
The climate is tropically warm and humid with coastal day temperatures averaging 28C. April to November tends to be drier, and November to April wetter.
